Context

USS New York (BB-34) was the sister ship of USS Texas, and the lead ship of the New York-class battleships. She was commissioned from May 15, 1914, to August 29, 1946. Bert S. Raymer was a machinist worker on Battleship New York. Crew members could be issued sewing kits, or buy them themselves. Raymer’s kit contains elements of both.
