Context

Harold E. Nichols Jr. was a draftee, called to service on July 28, 1941. He later joined the Marine Detachment on Battleship Texas from March 19, 1942, to March 17, 1944, participating in Operation “Torch,” and served throughout the rest of World War II. Marine Corps Service Dress were standard formal wear, equivalent to business attire, and included a green coat, slacks, and belt, to be worn with a khaki shirt and tie. Ribbons and marksmen medals could be worn on the left breast. The Honorable Discharge patch, or “Ruptured Duck” was worn above the right breast pocket on WWII servicemen and women uniforms and allowed them to continue wearing their uniforms after discharge.
