Battleship Texas had her keel laid at Newport News Shipbuilding on April 17, 1911, launched on May 18, 1912, and commissioned on March 12, 1914.
Samuel D. Miller (born Porfirio D. Miller) enlisted in the Navy on September 12, 1913, and was a seaman on Battleship Texas from March 12, 1914, to mid-1916. Texas was the first ship he served on, while he was a part of her commissioning crew.
