Addressed to Geo. P. Whirrel. Envelope sent from USS Texas on the morning of February 13, 1946, to Lacon, Illinois. Features a stamp of the Naval Officer Crest with the eagle facing to the right, rather than the left, likely owing to the maker carving the stamp with the "correct" image, rather than its reflection.Context
Battleship Texas sailed to the east coast in January 1946, began preparation for deactivation and donation to the State of Texas on February 13, and was in the U.S. Reserve Fleet from June 18, 1946, to April 21, 1948. She was decommissioned at San Jacinto State Park.
Battleship Texas had her own post office. All mail passed through a censor before leaving the ship. Once the package is checked, it was stamped with a “U.S.S. TEXAS” stamp. If in a port, mail could carry the markers of the post office on shore.Collection
