Newspaper clipping with photo of Texas going through Panama Canal. Caption reads "TO MEET THE 'ENEMY.' The U.S.S. Texas in Gail- lard cut, Panama canal, dur- ing the recent maneuvers. Wide World Photos."

Context

Battleship Texas participated in various fleet maneuvers and exercises in the Atlantic Ocean (1919) and later Pacific Ocean from July 1919 through January 1924. Beginning in February 1923, maneuvers became known as Fleet Problems, which continued to 1939. Joseph Nemanic and John Dergantz collected photos throughout their time as Marines onboard Texas in the early 1920s. Newspapers often wrote stories about Battleship Texas and her crew. While sometimes inaccurate or sensational, they showed the perceptions of the Homefront, and were collected by civilian and crew alike.
