Description

Newspaper clipping of Battleship Texas' actions in North France in article titled "Veteran of Two Wars" and "Dangerous Twins" with photograph of Texas in New York Navy Yard undergoing repairs after the battle.

Context

Battleship Texas began preparations for the Battle of Cherbourg on June 18, 1944. She departed Plymouth for Normandy, supported with artillery fire, and returned to England on June 25, 1944. She was hit three times and finished repairs for battle damage on July 3, 1944. Harold E. Nichols Jr. was a draftee, called to service on July 28, 1941. He later joined the Marine Detachment on Battleship Texas from March 19, 1942, to March 17, 1944, participated in Operation “Torch,” and served throughout the remainder of World War II. Newspapers often wrote stories about Battleship Texas and her crew. While sometimes inaccurate or sensational, they showed the perceptions of the Homefront, and were collected by civilian and crew alike.
