Envelope sent from USS New York on the morning of July 10, 1939, at the beginning of the Midshipmen's Summer Practice Cruise. Features a stamp with three flags: the British red ensign of Canada, United States, and France.Context
USS New York (BB-34) was the sister ship of USS Texas, and the lead ship of the New York-class battleships. She was commissioned from May 15, 1914, to August 29, 1946. She participated in the nuclear testing at Bikini Atoll on June 1, 1946, and was sunk as a target ship on June 6, 1946.
Battleship New York had her own post office. All mail passed through a censor before leaving the ship. Once the package is checked, it was stamped with a “U.S.S. NEW YORK” stamp. If in a port, mail could carry the markers of the post office on shore.Collection
