Context

USS New York (BB-34) was the sister ship of USS Texas, and the lead ship of the New York-class battleships. She was commissioned from May 15, 1914, to August 29, 1946. She participated in the nuclear testing at Bikini Atoll on June 1, 1946, and was sunk as a target ship on June 6, 1946. Michael P. Pacella was a crew member aboard USS New York in the late 1930s. During WWII he was stationed on the ammunition ship USS Mount Hood (AE-11). On November 10, 1944, the ship exploded, taking the life of Pacella.
