USS New York (BB-34) was the sister ship of USS Texas, and the lead ship of the New York-class battleships. She was commissioned from May 15, 1914, to August 29, 1946. She participated in the nuclear testing at Bikini Atoll on June 1, 1946, and was sunk as a target ship on June 6, 1946.
Howard F. Flood Jr. enlisted in the Naval Reserves with parent permission on February 14, 1941, and went through basic training from July 5 to August 3. He went to additional schooling through September 3, 1941. His first assignment was on Battleship Texas.
