The photo album of Samuel D. Miller is considerably water damaged. The album dates to the commissioning and beyond into Galveston and Mexico throughout 1914. The string binding the album has been altered to account for fraying at the ends.

Context

Battleship Texas had her keel laid at Newport News Shipbuilding on April 17, 1911, launched on May 18, 1912, and commissioned on March 12, 1914. Battleship Texas was sent to Mexico following the Tampico Affair. She participated in the occupation of Vera Cruz from May 26, 1914, to August 8, and again from October 1 to December 26, 1914. Battleship Texas visited Galveston on November 6, 1914, to receive the silver service of the first U.S.S. Texas (1895) and receive her own service onboard. She departed back to Vera Cruz on November 14, 1914. Samuel D. Miller (born Porfirio D. Miller) enlisted in the Navy on September 12, 1913, and was a seaman on Battleship Texas from March 12, 1914, to mid-1916. Texas was the first ship he served on, while he was a part of her commissioning crew. Many crew members kept photo albums that each have hundreds of photos chronicling their service onboard.
