Description

175th Celebration 1985 (Gay Menning photos). These photos were found in an envelope with a note from Gay Menning. The envelope reads: "Gay Menning 175th Anniversary museum-Oct 12, 1985 For museum-If you want them for posterity-If you have lots already-just give them back! Turned out pretty good!" Some photos of this celebration taken by John Brant were mixed in with this collection and reassigned to 2021.P.FIC.270AN. We are assuming all of the 2021.P.FIC.309AG photos were taken by Gay Menning although Photo B is the only one with "GM" written on it. A-C have same date stamp and markings on the back. D-G have the same Kodak stamps on the back of them. 2021.P.FIC.309A A tall boy in a dark tricorne hat and period costume stands in the middle of a photo with a covered wagon and two donkeys? in the background outside. To his left is a slightly shorter boy in a period costume. To the right are three smaller children, two girls wearing bonnets and period dresses and a young boy in a dark wide brimmed hat and overalls. Yellow leaves have fallen on the grass. Back of photo reads: "DW Bay Village 175th 10/12/85." 2021.P.FIC.309B One adult woman in period costume and three children also in costume from photo A stand in front of the front end of the covered wagon. Two donkeys stand behind them. Back of photo reads: "GM Bay Village - 175th - 10/12/85." 2021.P.FIC.309C Two women in modern (at the time) 1980s clothing sit and look out of the back of the covered wagon on a road. Back of photo reads: "Bay Village - 175th-10/12/85." UPDATE 12/27/2021: A post on Facebook BVHS page of the photo got a response from Amy Thomas Schmitt. Schmitt wrote "Looks like maybe his mom {Rob Hull, in another photo at this time}, Jessie Hull looking out of the back of the wagon in the maroon jacket...Just looked this up: Jessie Redding Hull (b 7/27/1932, d 12/20/92) worked at the Bay Village Historical Society as secretary-treasurer and as a guide at the Rose Hill Museum. No dates were listed. She was skilled in early American crafts, demonstrated weaving at festivals around the state in the 80's and was a puppeteer." 2021.P.FIC.309D Children from photo A are joined by the adult woman from photo B. Everyone in period costume standing in front of the covered wagon and donkeys? There is a man to the far left, attending to the animals. Yellow leaves have fallen on the grass. UPDATE: After posting this photo on Facebook on 12/27/2021, a response came from Carrie Gerbick Scullin: "The little girl with brown hair in the main picture is me. I can't remember what exactly it was for, but it was the 80s. My mother was very active in the Bay Village Historical Society and I spent a good part of my childhood dressed as a pioneer." Another response from Amy Thomas Schmitt stated "Top photo far left (as you look at the pic) in the group is Rob Hull {she appears to be referring to the wagon pic but could also be referring to the band pic in the series}. He lived across the street from us on Crestview Dr. throughout the 70's and part of the 80's." 2021.P.FIC.309E A parade of people in modern 1980s clothing march down a road in Bay Village. Girl Scout Troop 18 is carrying a blue and gold banner. Four people carry umbrellas. 2021.P.FIC.309F A photo of the parade. Two vintage cars carry unknown dignitaries. The Bay High School band appears to be following behind them. 2021.P.FIC.309G A cut photo of the parade. Bay High School band appears led by woman in a white dress and young women in front with batons. A man in a red jacket with a bicycle is on the bottom left. A line of trees at top right have leaves that are just turning color.
