Scope and Content

2024.01.03 Americanism Record Book 1994-1995 VFW Post 9693 p. 19-20 Front, p. 19: 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge With dreams of a fine Christmas, as the Allied troops were pushing the German armed forces from lands occupied by them for four years, reality in form of a surprise counter-attack dampened or ended them in Belgium. On Dec. 16, 1944, the German high command put into action a plan which they served for this time when American troops were reorganizing and refitting their battered unite from heavy fighting in the Huertgen Forest. This exhibit is on view from Dec. 5 throught Dec. 21. The Battle of the Ardennes, known as the Bulge, lasted from Dec. 16 through Jan. 25, 1945. It took a heavy toll of soldiers from both the German and the Allied armies and was a final turning point of World War II in Europe. The Allies decisively routed the enemy forces back onto German soil and continued the drive on Berlin and eventual meeting with Soviet Union forces, and the final surrender of the German Army. At Bay High School a larger photomural of soldiers being served food in a wintry outdoor scene dominates the exhibit. There are mannequins outfitted with actual clothing of that war. A rifle, M-1, with a helmet with markings used by medics of the U.S. Army, is a symbol of the medics who were killed in the Malmedy Massacre in Belgium, not far from Bastogne. A tribute to an Army nurse, large framed poster of American bombers, insignia of the various units of the Army and "nose-art" of the Air Force poster are displayed. The uniforms and mannequins were furnished by Gil Sanow II of Elyria, noted for his collection of uniforms and memorabilia from various conflicts. A.
