Article describing the 50th Wedding celebration of J.B. Cahoon and his wife. Fifty Years Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Cahoon, "At Home" To Their Friends, in The Gold- en Close of a Half Century Interestingly someone wrote the date 1881 (date of the party) next to the sentence "The two sat in the east parlor, a marriage bell of golden-rod to the right of them...." The person underlined "east parlor." It is interesting that the article mentions an "east" parlor during this time which may indicate the existance of the current "Victorian Parlor" by 1881 or earlier. Invitations were sent to friends in 13 states. About a hundred or so people attended. The piece remarks how Margaret seems in her usual strength but that Joel less so at nearly 88 years of age. Joel had a paralytic stroke 2 years prior and lost the use of his limbs. His mental capacities were still strong. Lists Joel's history in Dover as a first settler and then goes into his marriage and children. There was a table with "many valuable presents" including two crayon portraits of Joel and Margaret by artist Kavanaugh of the City Hall. They were a present from one of the daughters. Near these new portraits were old ones from shortly after the Cahoon's 1831 wedding. In the newer one, Margaret is wearing gold combs and diamond pin from her daughters. The son of the groomsman from the 1831 wedding regretfully declined the inviation and wrote a touching letter that was read.
