Aldrich 445 Cahoon Road / Bay Village, Ohio P-Q Furniture, etc of H.W. Aldrich estate - 2 pages, one sided, typed p. A 1944 Mon. March 20 - I went to work in the morning while daddy and mother went to the Public Auction Sale of the Old House. In the middle of the morning mother called saying to Betty [inserted above: Manning] that "Virginia has it." I was all excited when Betty told me for I had already explained to her about the House and how we were so afraid Some one else would buy it who had a lot of money. Before the Sale there was a bank looking the place over, a builder who said he'd tear it all down + build a new one, others who had ideas too. All day I kept smiling to myself at our good fortune + I could hardly wait till that evening to hear all the particulars. I wondered how daddy and mother came out on the deal. When I said good bye to them in the morning I told mother she should have her smelling Salts with her. Mother laughed saying "well, I have a little lucky stone that Grandpa Guthery gave me and also the lucky dollar bill (the one she fished out of the lake years ago) They told me they went into the assembly room #26 in the basement of the court house. There didn't seem to be anyone there. Siras Evard walked in + daddy asked him if he was going to be one of his competitors. + he put his hand in his pocket + pulled out three pennies saying "It doesn't look like it" Then another friend Ray Rix came + Mr Locker, our attorney. Then they all went up + took seats in the very front row. Several other small pieces of property were bid on first. About 9:30 lot no 98 of the Aldrich family was described and our attorney bid the amount mentioned in the foreclosure suit + mother said they held their breath for other bids but there were no other sounds. The auctioneer said "any one else bidding on this property?" one, Two, three sold!" our attorney walked up to the desk + gave them my name. Mother turned to Siras + said "Can you beat that?" Daddy went up to the desk + got the receipt. That took care of that! It was all over at about 10 to 10. That night we were in a great excitement. It seemed too good to be true that we got the old House at the minimum bid. I said "maybe the place has termites." after dinner we were still in rather a nervous state so we went to the movies + saw Carmen Miranda. On the way home daddy said he was going to turn the deed over to the Guarantee Title Co to investigate back to 1700 so we would have a clear title.
