Scope and Content

Article on the death Miss Lydia Cahoon, age 81 after a three month illness. BAY VILLAGE The community lost this last week one of its most useful and loved members. Miss Lydia E. Cahoon passed peacefully on to eternal life, on Thursday, March 29, at 4:05 p.m., after an illness of three months. She was the granddaughter of Joseph Cahoon, who came to settle the place where she had her home, on October 10, 1810. Her father was Joel B. Cahoon who lived on the same place till his death in 1882. Her mother, Margaret A. Cahoon was a woman of unusual intellectual ability and charming ways, many of which were prominent in her eldest daughter, Lydia. Miss Cahoon was educated at Mrs. Green's Select School in Dover, and at Miss Linda T. Guilford's Seminary in Cleveland. She will be remembered by many as their teacher for she taught in Cuyahoga County schools, in Toledo, and in the Cleveland public schools. In Cleveland she had a foreign element, often not one English speaking student. To them she taught the love of country and the flag under which they lived, as one of the essentials of citizenship. She retired from teaching fourteen years ago, returning to the Rose Hill home of her family. She interested herself in the religious and social life of her home village, contributing largely to building the new M.E. church and parsonage. Each year she with her sisters, entertained at a June festival at Rose Hill that was attended by hundreds of her friends. She was a charter member of Saturday Club and also of Commodore Perry Chapter, Daughters of 1812, of which she was chaplain ever since its organization. On Monday, April 2, a large number of friends assembled at Rose Hill to attend the last services for Miss Cahoon. She lay in a bower of beautiful flowers, the room being garlanded with roses, lilies, carnations, jonquils, violets and dainty ferns. Rev. Dr. F.W. Luce, district superintendent of Cleveland district, paid a beautiful tribute to her gentleness, kindness, courtesy and real goodness. Dr. W.C. Endley, a former pastor, and Rev. D.W. Knight assisted in the service. Miss Margaret Wright, of Cleveland, sang in a sweet clear voice, “One Sweetly Solemn Thought,” and “O Paradise.” W.E. Wright sang a favorite hymn, “In Heavenly Love Abiding.” Mrs. C.B. Tozier, founder of Commodore Perry Chapter, U.S.D. of 1812, spoke feelingly of her friend, giving her data in the Chapter, she being a real daughter, and the chaplain who prepared the beautiful ritual that would be used for her today. At the close of their service each member of the chapter placed a white carnation upon the loved sister. Six friends, C.G. Barkwell, W.O. Mathews, Dr. A.S. Cooley, Edward Cowley, Geo. H. Brown and R.S. Hoover, bore her from the loved and sacred home and she was tenderly laid to rest by her dear ones in Lakeside Cemetery. Her memory is as fragrant as the valley lilies that lay upon her breast. Dr. and Mrs. W.C. Endley, Judge and Mrs. D. J. Nye, Mrs. Aaron Bullock and Miss Bullock and Mrs. W.E. Cahoon from Elyria; Mrs. Joseph Jameson and Mr. and Mrs. Leverett J. Cahoon of Avon; and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dougherty, of Wellington, attended the funeral of Miss Cahoon, last Monday. Special services have been given at the church this past week. The Ladies' Aid society postponed its meeting for two weeks because of the death of its founder. Miss May Hollenbach, of Cleveland, spent some time at Rose Hill, the past week. Little Edward Cowley is very much better. The grading at Cahoon hill goes steadily on.
