Bay Boy Scouts build cabin on old homestead site
By Kathy Gray
BAY VILLAGE -
Every Saturday morning, a group of men and boys get together in a little valley behind Rose Hill Museum to resume their work on a project started in 1975. The group is building a lifesize replica of a cabin put up some 167 years ago by the Cahoon family, [not a replica, but an example of an early cabin as we have no records of what the Cahoon cabin was like].
The cabin is being built as a community project by the Boy Scouts of Bay Village, led by troop leader John Brant....
Planning for the structure started in cooperation with the Bay Bicentennial commission. Actual work was not begun until February 1976. Much of the inital buiding was done on a temporary site north of the Bay Fire station; the city's maintenance force moved the logs to the permanent site in late 1976.
Hand tools...are being used, so progress is slow. Telephone poles, donated by the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co., serve as the logs but are, according to Brant, "very hard wood to work with."
Work on the stone foundation which circles the cabin and the loft cross-over logs is now in progress. Individual scouts will build tables,.... A pegged wooden floor and a large stone hearth are also planned.
One additon to the cabin is already completed. Girl Scout troops throughout Bay made a patch-work quilt last summer...it depicts historical scenes of Bay history in its squares. The quilt is waiting at the home of Mrs. Donald Harris, a Girl Scout camping expert, until its new home is ready.
...Last Oct. 10, the 166th anniversary of the date when the original Cahoon cabin was started, the Scouts laid a cornerstone for the cabin in a ceremony attended by more than 200 people.
Two representations have been made of the structure - a set of architectural drawings by Jim Sondles, a professional architect, and a three-dimensional model made from the scale drawings. Chris Sommer, daughter of Richard Sommer, Bay Village recreation director, created this model, which is currently on display at the community house. [Not the one in the Genealogy Room at Rose Hill.]
Brant said that the city had promised to fill in the wet land close to the cabin to keep the structure dry and safe from erosion. Much is left to be finished on the project; completion time is unknow.Collection
