Scope and Content

NEEDS TO BE PHYSICALLY RENUMBERED Bay Youth Brought the Community Together: The Early History of the Bayway Cabin article in Observer, August 16, 2022. Written by Bay Village Historical Society employee Michele Yamamoto in August 7, 2022. The article discusses the early history of the Bay Way or Bayway cabin. This version, printed in the Westlake/Bay Village Observer Newspaper is an abbreviated version of the article originally written for BVHS blog post Glimpse of the Past. It only prints the introduction of the article. This printed article version includes 5 black and white photos from the BVHS collection of Bayway Cabin archives. Please note that some have not been verified by BVHS as being from the 1951 or the 1958 construction unless noted otherwise. 1. "Teens at the Bayway construction in 1950" Actually, this was probably during the move in 1951 or before in 1950 and this is noted on the BVHS website version. 2. "1958 Bayway Cabin Concept Drawing" 3. "Teenagers operate heavy machinery!" (this would be 1950 or 1951 probably) 4. "The young builders take a break" (probably 1958 remodel?) 5. (only photo at top right) "Bay Village students in 1950 pose by the permit sign" (if you use a magnifying glass, you can see the date on the permit sign behing the teen) The original article lists the entire early history of the Bayway Cabin: The original building began as a temporary building as early as 1924 to house the school cafeteria as new additions were being built at Parkview School. It remained there in that function for many years. It was moved to the site on the north side of Wolf behind City Hall (where current Library exists as of April 2022) in March 22, 1951 after the move was approved to use the old, leaky building as a community space in 1950. Bay Village Historical Society member Bob Reid was interviewed by Michele Yamamoto about how his mother Esther Reid was a part of the Youth Cabin Committee. Bob's class of 1956 was responsible for jump-starting an addition and remodel in 1958. On October 18, 1958 members of the community and even local teenagers helped to finish the job during a "Bayway Finishing Day" event. It is noted in the original and longer article that as of this date the BVHS has only a few documents from the cabin's years from 1960s-1990s. A second blog post about the later years of the cabin came out in September of 2022. BVHS did not submit this second article to the local papers and it appears it was never published. Original Glimpse of the Past post can be found on the BVHS website and in digital records.
