From sign: A Catboat is a sailboat with a single sail on a single mast positioned in the forward section (bow) of the boat. This style is simple in construction, maintenance and sailing. Its disadvantage is a limited ability to sail upwind. They were used for fishing and trade along the coast. The Catboat eventually gained the attention of sailing enthusiasts and became popular as a racing class, youth sail trainer and a family daysailer. This certain Catboat has a center-board keel with a kick-up rudder, designed that when faced with any obstacles it bounces in an upward direction.
From Wikipedia.com: A catboat is a sailboat with a single sail on a single mast set well forward in the bow of the boat. Traditionally they were gaff rigged. Most have a shallow draft, with centerboards, although some have a keel. The hull can be 12 to 40 feet long with a beam half as wide as the hull length at the waterline.Collection
