Scope and Content

"Clague House Door" A. Christmas card. Watercolor painting of the Clague house door in Westlake, Ohio. The door is located on the front of the Clague Museum run by the Westlake Historical Society. The panel featured on the door is show with a Christmas swag of evergreen, pinecones and a red bow. Blank inside. Back: "Clague House Door" Watercolor by Thomas William Jones copyright 1988 / Bellevue, Washington / Collection of Dr. and Mrs. Robert T. Johnston B. Note included in the Christmas card from Carrie Jones, the artists wife. Clague House Door Few people are subjects in Tom's paintings and yet there presence is felt. Frozen watercolor footprints leads us up walkways, traveling past lamppost swags and up paths towards doors where a warm welcome awaits us. We visually walk to the front porch of country stores where...through his art...we hear merriment, see handcrafted goods for sale, and visit with others in those rural stores of our memories. There is quaintness in the way small town and rural homes are so often decorated. This attracts Tom in ways glitter never will. He is drawn to their quiet solitude, is riveted in their punch of holiday red. I wonder how many others who were passing by noticed the simple swag adorning the Clague house door. Did they slow to see the shadows cast by pine needles across the white facade? Did they catch the wisp of red ribbon brushing pine cones ever so gently? Carrie C. Artist note: The Clague House Museum's door wreath was beautiful one bright Dec. afternoon! Tom
