Dear Sir – today Mr Geuder wrote to pay
his Dover taxes, and the Deputy Treasurer wanted
the whole tax, and being informed by mail that
the special school tax was enjoined he denied it
to professed ignorance of it, and still refused
to accept any portion unless the whole were paid.
Upon my accompanying him to see what was
the matter the Deputy Treasure – Mr Turney not
being in – as if previously instructed reiterated
his former statements and was disposed to that
an explanation with contempt. From subsequent
inquires we came to the conclusion it was a
studied scheme to pretend ignorance if any
injunction or to say deny it. so that you might
doubt whether any thing had been done, and so
that rather than waste time in your tiring
and anxiety you would pay the whole and
give no farther head to the matter, and that
they might afterwards claim you had waived
your rights and thus get a due upon you.
We were for then led to suspect that the Auditor
and there were in this scheme. At any rate up
to the time Mr Geuder attacked them they had
taken no steps to ascertain what was enjoined
and what was not. Step were forthwith taken to
enlighten Mr Turney and debates as to the
impolicy of continuing this game, whether
played through ignorance as he now pretends
or as we more suspect through a visit to serve him

More Robert & Co. and he has now quite
backed down and pleads misunderstanding due
and has his books fixed, and under the threat
of trial he is to send for the money if any paid
in violation of the injunction promises to repay
the same upon call
I suspect this conduct of
theirs which the Treasure now seems heartily
to regret, has here bugged some of you into
paying, but if so, all you have to do is call
and get it back – for he sees he is in the
boat. The injunction was allowed on the
24 day of Dec 1868 and was served on the
same day at 11 O clock Am.
Please correct any misappre-
-hension that many exist on the subject
