Death of a Pioneer Woman
Rapidly the first settlers of Northern Ohio are being removed by death, and soon the last of the fathers and mothers who, more than half a century ago, broke up the dense wilderness of the lake coast, amid almost incredible privations and hardships established pleasant homes for their children and their children's children, will "rest from their labors." It is well to ever hold in remembrance their enterprise, endurance, fortitude, and lives of many virtues and great usefulness.
Mrs. Abigail Cahoon Johnson died at her late residence in Dover, May 3, 1869 aged 73 years. She was born in Salisbury, Herkimer County, New York, and emigrated with her father, Joseph Cahoon to Ohio in October, 1810. She was married to the late Hon. Leverett Johnson, of Dover, in July, 1814, the first marriage in that township. The deceased was the oldest inhabitant of the place having been a resident of Dover for nearly fifty-nine years. Her presence at the Cahoon festivals in commemoration of the first settlement of Dover, will no longer bring joy to numerous descendents, relatives, and friends.
Mrs. Johnson became a member of the Congressional Church thirty years ago and was an exemplary and consistent Christian. In all the endearing relations of life she exemplified the highest Christian character and her "adorning was that of a meek and quiet spirit."Collection
