History of Song
"When You and I Were Young, Maggie"
Miss Laura Cahoon taught our school in Sheffield, Ohio. Her parents lived in Dover at the north of Finney Creek where it empties into Lake Erie, about 15 miles west of Cleveland, or about 8 miles from Rocky River. Miss Laura invited the school to go for a sleigh ride to her home for an oyster supper. It was a bright moonlight night, and two sleigh loads of us went.
The supper table was set in a long, large dining room Mrs. Cahoon (The "Maggie" of the poem) sat at the head of the table, and I, being one of the older students, was invited to sit at her right hand. Mr. Cahoon, a large man with white hair and long white beard, sat at the foot of the table. I remember that "Maggie" asked the blessing. After the meal she told of their early settlement there: how she and a girl friend rode the horses through the timber from Rocky River. If I remember rightly, she said her granddaughter, or niece, Mrs. Attwell, wrote a poem to be read at their annual picnic - the words being those of the well known song, "When you and I were Young, Maggie" The poem was sent to Chicago and set to music by Professor Roat.
We had learned the song at school and we all sang it at this time. "Maggie" took us out doors and pointed up the creek where we could see the old mill and the hill where "Maggie" had buried her children, outlined in the moonlight. We thanked the Cahoons for the lovely evening and the entertainment, and drove away singing, "When you and I were Young, Maggie"
