In the late 1800 and early 1900's, hand painted porcelain was a huge fad. Thousands of "blanks" (unpainted white) China were shipped, mostly from the Limoge region of France. China painting was an acceptable avocation for women, many used it to pass the time, some used it to make money and some became very good at it. The china became their blank canvas. Flowers, portraits and fruit were common subject matter.
