Scope and Content

This appears to be a speech given at the 100th anniversary of the Cahoon family in Dover. The speech is drafted on Bay Village Board of Education stationary. Board of Education Bay Village Miss Ida M. Cahoon, President. "Ida M. Cahoon, 1910" written by someone in pencil on the top right of first page. It is a great pleasure and a greater honor than any it has been my fortune to receive, to be Elected as the President of this Centennial Celebration. Indeed my interest in the function has been so great as to prompt the question. "Did you com from Vermont with Joseph + Lydia Cahoon in 1810." My mind reverts to those who on the years have occupied this chair. Pioneers of sacred memory, William Rook, Norman Day, Clark Eldred; the strong men of our households such as Hubbard Johnson, Thomas H. Cahoon, and Leverret J. Cahoon, friends whose names are dear to many, but the greatest of all 2000.FIC.02.015B these was Dr. Jared Potter Kirtland, who so frequently presided, always delighting us with his rare genius, ability and wonderful intellect. Aided by that happy pioneer editor, Josiah A. Harris, he made us wish the October days would lengthen to those of Arctic summers. We recall the old time welcome upon these anniversary day, and in behalf of the "Tribe of Joseph" as Uncle William used to style his father's descendants, attend to you with all the fervor of the days of old our heartest greetings. 2000.FIC.02.015C "Hear the Royal Proclamation At the Fiftieth anniversary many were present who were familiar with out grandfather, they told many interesting facts about him among them some of his religious life, and they sang his favorite hymn. Some of the singers had joined with him in the service. Today there will be voices of the children and grandchildren of the choir of 1860 who will lead, as all are requested to sing, Hear the Royal Proclamation" 2000.FIC.02.015D History There are stories which never grow old. Had we a Totem Pole many bears, wolves, indian heads, covered wagons and log cabins might be carved there on, so that he who came on pilgrimage each year to Rose Hill could read the tales our grandfathers could tell. The story has often been told, but today more fully than ever before the History of the Cahoon Family will be read as prepared by Miss Laura E. Cahoon. 2000.FIC.02.015E Dr Gilbert We have a friend who never failed us. If we were going to have a birthday dinner in a tent, with roast pig in the menu, he gave us a delightful talk on "A forward look." If we met in May to lay our tribute of remembrance on "The low green tent" of the soldier boy, his words eliseted applause from a responsive audience. When we want to celebrate Washington's birthday appropriately, with Saturday Club we asked a poem. The next night the patriotic verses were delivered. After 80 years had passed over our church history and a new movement was inagurated, many illustrious men came to deliver addresses + sermons But after the Sunday morning sermon by our friend who is not 2000.FIC.02.015F Love Story of Two Brothers. A very, very long time ago there were two Miss Cahoons who were married. A great grandson of one of these ladies will tell you of them, and how the family of Stiles is connected with ours. He will also explain the question so often asked as to the relationship of the late H.M. Addison, who was permanent in the origination of our association. 2000.FIC.02.015G so very great in stature it was remarked 'He is head and shoulders above them all." When planning for today, to meet at this dear home, and worship at the shrine of our ancestors, we again appealed to out unfailing friend, who though crowded with duties consented to addresses us. Early last week a very pleasant letter was received from him stating he would be here this morning. Another mail brought us word he was at his daughter's in Chicago, unable to stand, but his physician said he would have him out in two or three days Saturday night a hastily written note informed us it was 2000.FIC.02.015H utterly impossible to anticipate being with us, send his greetings and best wishes, and he said with exclamation points, My speech is all blocked out." So we will not have the pleasure of hearing Dr Gilbert today, much as we all regret it. 2000.FIC.02.015I Judge Nye One fine afternoon in making calls we visited the home of two very attractive sisters. We were received at the door by one of the ladies and found the other engaged in the parlor. Now I may not be correct in the use of that word engaged in all its significance. At any rate she and the young man were seated upon the same sofa. It afterward developed that most of her young lady friends called that same afternoon, but regardless of the interuptions a marriage followed. The friendship thus began has lived through the years_ and I am asking that Judge David J. Nye shall tell us some of the events which came into that fellowship with our family. 2000.FIC.02.015J Reuben Hall. Most of us here have known Mr. Reuben Hall, all our lives and will be pleased to hear from him some incidents of pioneer life. When he has finished speaking you will all marvel that one so youthful has a memory which reaches so far into the past. 2000.FIC.02.015K It developed in our history that the Cahoon's were Baptists Very true for several generationsof the Rhode Island families. But in the second generation in Ohio a number were Methodists and some others married Methodists whose influence was very great. Consequently a Methodistic feature entered the Pioneer Celebrations, and after the set program was concluded a sort of class meeting was held, where if one had an experience to relate he had the privilege of doing so. Does any friend present wish to 2000.FIC.02.015L ...story we have...
