Scope and Content

2000.FIC.06.1.15.2 - .1 - First part of news article "Their Modern Home Has 91-Year Old Wrapping" by Lois Keever, 1967. Gives the history of the Saddler settlers and how they all came to Dover Township after the War of 1812. Mentions that the son of War of 1812 veteran William Saddler, also named William, took over 360 acres of land just east of the current Sadler Road, with Winsor to the south. To build a cool food storage cellar neighbors dragged sandstone from a way station at the current Bradley and Detroit Roads for wall and stairs. Boulders from the lake were added and packed down with earthen floor. The 11 bedroom house was built with beveled edged siding and a mansard roof. William Jr. was engaged in a commercial fishing business. He had 5 children. Two years before this article was published (around 1965) Tom and Barbara Britton bought the home from Mrs. Merriel A. Shook whose mother was the aunt of Bay Village's Service Director, Bill Sadler (William F. Sadler). Although Redfin.com lists the renovations were done in 1962 and home was last bought Sept. 18, 2008. Bill recalls spending time there when he was young. The Brittons "modernized" the 91-year-old house, removing the dividing wall between the two front parlors. Tom Britton works in construction and had the skills to work on the home. He also bought the large home to accommodate his big growing family...(continued on another section). Saddler in the article is spelled the way William F. spelled his name, with only one "D." .2 - Photo of 5 men sitting. Under the photo in blue ink is "Reading Club." Back reads "Dec. 19, 1937. Ray Osborn, Meryl Shook, Dut [?] Ashcraft, Bottom: Dr. Jesse Saddler, John Easton (Police Chief) 3" x 4 1/4"
