Description

Model of a Great Lakes Schooner. "Vermillion Big Three Masted: Three masted, blue hull, cabin in stern, brown bowsprit. This model shows a typical Great Lakes schooner having three masts of unequal height and typically rigged with fore and aft sails. Each mast had a top platform where the upper mast joined the lower mast and the shrouds (think guy wires) secured the mast to the hull. A deckhouse located at the stern held the captain's quarters and the galley where the crew ate. The spar extending from the bow over the water is called a bowsprit. It secured the head sails needed to both power and turn the boat.
