Description

Emerald green satin flatter hat with an upturned brim and pleated matching fabric above the brim and crown of the hat. Back has a one loop bow extending down with velvet fabric flowers in fall and beige wire. Inside: Green grosgrain ribbon below the brim, green lace fabric over gold metallic fabric. Black elastic from the sides. Two pins were found in the back of the hat by the flowers and have been removed. Tags: Chanda in script. Below The Higbee Co./ CLEVELAND Chanda (Millinery) by skorver1 Michael Chanda (1920-2004) Chanda (who goes by no other name) learned the tricks of the millinery trade under Hattie Carnegie. Chanda worked in her salon for three years when he finished high school. A native of Checkoslovakia, he came to this country when four months old and returned to his homeland often until he was eleven years old. After that he worked for a theatrical designer in New York during the summers. "I thought I'd be a costume designer- until I started making hats. I was fascinated by it all, of course, so I opened my own business in 1944. At that time I was alone in the market. I was the only one to make small hats (because most of the women were petite). Women have found out that small hats are more comfortable and smarter too. The youthful hat is almost a trademark for me. I don't emphasize certain styles for certain ages.
