Scope and Content

Newspaper article, "Huntington Playhouse going up." A story on the groundbreaking and construction of Huntington Playhouse. It is located on the same site of the old playhouse that burned down on May 8th the year prior. The Provenzale Construction Co. will complete the $45,000 shell, possibly within seven week. Then Volunteers will pitch in and furnish the interior. "The Old concrete-clock stage section that remained from the fire will be used as a backstage wing," he [Martin Schickler] explained. "The stage will run north-and-south and measure 80 feet across and 37 feet deep. That's one of the biggest community theater stages in the area." He said seating will be 248, with will make it a more intimate theater than the previous 289-seating-capacity allowed. The auditorium area will resemble a barn, he painted with white and will contain a lobby in which art shows will be hung. It will meet all state fire codes and regulations and will include a sprinkler system and non-combustible materials, according to Schickler. The Metropolitan Park Board has approved a three-year lease for Huntington Playhouse. The structure will remain on park land, south of Lake Ave. in Bay Village. THE THEATER GROUP has raised $6,000 through a series of fun-raising events, ranging from a pop bottle drive to Hollihan and Big Chuch basketball game. The group received $34,000 in insurance money after the fire. Plans are underway to raise an additional $10,000 to complete the fund drive. As Schickler noted, "That's a lot of pop bottles."
