Scope and Content

This is a three page letter from John D. Weld to Aaron Aldrich. It concerns financial transactions relating to sale of stock in a bank, consideration of a forthcoming dividend and disposition of funds. The letter is in two pieces and perhaps half the document is missing. Further, the document is torn at three creases and there are two holes and missing pieces. There is some staining where the wax seal bled through. pg.1 Dear Brother, Smithfield Dec 28. 1838 I receid' last evening yours of the 17th June wishing me to write immediately to you I had been sometime enquiring for a letter the above sum of money Stephen paid to me the 10th Inst I cast the Interest from the 17th of May Brother Stone said you told him if Stephen would get the money you would throw off the Interest we concluded it would be no more than right for him to pay it so I did nothing to Stephen about it I expect he would be quite offended if he should find it out-- the interest on $7.00 amounted to $23.68 I added thirty two Cents to make even change which I shall charge to you I drew your dividend from the bank $15.60 paid Mr. Stone pg. 2 $11.33 the remainder I gave you credit I presence you expected. you to send it in this. But my pecuniary being so very small at this time I took the liberty to withhold it At this time I wrote in my last that Aaron Mowrey had concluded to take your Stock in the Bank you wrote in your last as though you expected me to send it in this you must have been aware that to transfer it you must send the power of an attorney to me or some other one to make a transfer which article must be signed by yourself & Wife. Mr. Mowry told me about it middle of last month that he would buy it the money most of it they had the by them if you would let the dividends come with it since the Bank divided last which was the 10th of Nov. I saw Mr. Stone a few days after asked pg. 3 him if you gave any directions in particular about selling it he said no but thought best to let them take it. The money is ready which you can have as soon as you send the power to make the transfer. I had settled most of the rent in this farm for the present year asked Stephen who was to pay the expence of dividing on the two shares he bought he said it did not belong to him those I have settled with allowed me a bill which amounts to $3.41. each the Committees Bill was $22. calling Council $5. Boarding Commt. three days at 37/p ¢ each $37/p Keeping horse[?] for Commt. three days at 25 c per day $.75 $1. paid to Col. Mowry for selling rent of farm $2. for my time horse and waggon while concerning pg. 4 Council. Attending to court nothing. As you mentioned about making an exchange of the money you got for the hay for your part of the Inventory will suit me. I calculate to come to a settlement with the heirs this Spring if I have to sell my Stock to raise the money. Abraham’s note I expect with not be paid so that we can have that to divide he has not yet returned from Ohio. Amy has not heard from him in some time the last she heard he was beginning to ride out. Marcy was with him sick of the fever and Ague[?] Daniel wrote the last he was there or about there. I have been thinking since I read your last of having some other person manage my farm the ensuing year if Joseph is out of health he will not want it probably will it or not be best to have some one manage that would want to plough and plant. Ezekiel Brown will not buy it I ex- -pect he has not money enough to pay for it. Mr. Stone says pg. 5 that farm is first rate worth more than this I am on for a man to get a living off of he seems to have attend his mind very materially since last Spring about New Connecticut you rather touched Lydia & Andrew last Spring by telling them that farm of mine was worth more than she says fourtimes as much as that they had ran into debt four thousand dollars for That would bring my farm up to a sum of money that would pay any one for parting with as pleasant a situation as that. Perhaps Ezekiel Brown would manage my farm on some condition if he should not buy between the end of Spring by this means he could ascertain how poor it was. Our healths are good no more for want of room John D Weld ----[hole] look for an other in -----[damage]
