Scope and Content

This is a three page letter from John D. Weld to Aaron Aldrich, a part of their continuing correspondence. It contains health comments and more business concerning stock disposition and financial discussion. Several parts of the letter are missing. pg.1 Dear Brother, Smithfield Feby 7. 1839 Last Saturday evening I received yours of The 20 Inst were glad to hear that you were all enjoy- -ing a comfortable state of health also was glad yo hear that you had read the within acceptance containing the $724 save I have nothing new to write at this time we are all enjoying a comfortable state of health likewise all your relative in this vicinity Abraham, returned from the State of Ohio, something like a month since I have not seen him he makes it his home at present at Woodstock Con. he has been at Andrews; three or four days but we did not have the honor saving him I understand he says he likes the Ohio very well should return then if his wife was willing what [hole] about I know next A. Winsor thinks he can make [hole] with him so as to secure that note Andrew wants [hole] that lot of land that forty or fifty acres of land then he should be well off. But I should not be disappointed if he went to spining cotton again in less than six months. You wished me to write in my next when I should probably move to Ohio that I am not able to say at present it will not be so that I can get there this season coming I must need some money when I get there to put comfortable building on that farm that I now own but I was aware of that when I bought it if Ezekiel Brown would conclude to pay that at what it is worth I would take the money which that would fetch add to it the money that it would cost to put on the building & and buy a larger farm with building thereon. Although I do not think I should get a situation that I should like better or a farm that lies handsomer to improve Mr Stone recommends my farm very highly he seems to have altered his mind about new Connecticut since last Spring. I suggested the idea in my last of having my farm let the next year to some other person under the conviction that if Joseph's eyes were so that he were not able to labor he would be glad to get rid of it I presume it would be as well for me and the land to have it remain but I wish Joseph to put the hay into Stacks in good order so that it will not get damaged by the rains. If Joseph makes out to get some saw logs to the mill for me I think it would be best to have them cut long enough for 14 ft posts and I must make some arrangements for paying for sawing. I wish you to write me again soon after you receive this and let me know what the hay amounts to. Julia sends her love says I must write to Mrs. Aldrich that our friends are all well in this vicinity. No more for the want of room. I am Dr sir yours John D Weld pg.2 State of Rhode Island Smithfield Exchange Bank Abraham reserved to pay his father for the money that he borr- -rowed Andrew says that he can not pay the money this Spring but is willing to give his note should the be such a trade made I should propose to have Andrew give his note to each of the heirs separately for their resp- -ective shares so that I can make a finish of settling the Estate of father Winsor all except the $200 that is to be kept for Mary & Daniel Rhodes. I am making out my account to present to the next court of Probate to be holden on the best Saturday in this month which will have to lie over one month to issue an order of notion to all concerned to appeal and examine it for themselves if convenient should be glad to have you attend the court will probably be holden on the last Saturday in March which will allow or disallow the SD. account. If not convenient for you to attend you may rest assured that there will be those there that will look to it immediately. As near as I can prophecy the will be some when in the neighborhood of fifty dollars to divide to each beside the note of Abraham's but you will have the particulars in fall hereafter Mrs. Stone talks of moving in to her part of this back in we leave the first of April next what Mr. Stone is going about we know not he talks of Ohio somewhere down on the canal or river neat some of those villages he thinks if he could get
