1996.A.061Description
Lake Erie Sharpie or pount-net boat model with two masts, white hull with green top built by Henry Wischmeyer.
Sharpies gained popularity in the early 1700's and on into the late 1800's for their speed, versatility, and upwind sailing prowess Narrow and flat-bottomed, they were easily built by fishermen or owners from local lumber most often white pine and white oak. This model's two masted sailing rig shows an innovation that was widely accepted on Lake Erie: The upper sail area is supported by a wooden double batten screw-bolted through the sail. This increased the sail area without needing excessively tall masts and greatly simplified rigging the upper sail area. Sharpies were often used along the Erie shoreline to harvest fish from nets strung on vertical poles hammered into the lake bottom.Collection
