Letter from E.B. Sawyer to Selden Osborn 1854
The letter begins by saying he misses his old neighbors. His wife has a cough and discusses her health.
The crops in the area are good: wheat and oat very heavy on the ground and nearly fit to cut. Some have 300 acres of corn which is a staple crop. He has 12 acres of corn, 1 potato and 4 oats.
The chestnuts that Selden sent are doing fine 18 to 20" high and he is going to send for a barrel if Selden raises any. He urges Selden to come and visit and see his wife. This would sound big that he has a patient in Illinois. He must be content with the honor and not expect a large fee. He has a brother Edward who is on the way and would come with him.
He sends his regards and asks Selden to write back.

Dear Friend Osborn
I begin to feel I ought
to answer your call letter for reasons
one (a very selfish one) because I want to hear
from you and our old neighbors the other
because it is honestly due to you with these
apologies I will proceed
We are tolerable well Mrs. Sawyer is troubled
with a bad cough its seems to be a good deal as
Phoebes was. She has doctored some for it
what we could do our selves we have nothing
but apothecary Doctors here I should be glad
if we had your advice about her cough and
some of your cooling syrups for her to take
She is of that age of life which is so subject to
disease I think if we could keep her a long
two or three years she might regain and have
comfortable health again I wish you would
call in and see her the first time you pass.
This is a very healthy country I believe the air
and water both good crops look extremely good
wheat and oat very heavy on the ground
and nearly fit to eat and a right smart chance
of corn on the ground to till up than 30 acres
here would be considered no crop at tall at all
45 a crop at is a common crop here for a common
Farmer and some have three hundred acres and
field corn is the staple crop here although
I believe this to be a good wheat and grap[e] country
the old settler are selling out here to Eastern
people and they altering the face of the
country very fast and tearing away the cabins
and buildings houses and barns sowing wheat and
oat and raisings potatoes.
