Scope and Content

Letter from Edward Arthur Tuttle to Mr. Criswell answering his last letter received. He begins by telling Criswell that the weather is good, the spring has been fair and the crops are doing well. He is trying to raise some golden bantam sweet corn this year and laments the poor soil condition. He mentions that they were the guests of the William Sadler family recently and tells about how their family were early settlers in the area. They were shown the old Saddler house built by great grandfather who made his own brick. The Saddler great grandmother was crossing the Cuyahoga and it was icy and she lost tools but they were able to find them in the spring. The granddaughter was bitten by a wolf and lost a leg from the bite. The remainder of the letter is three and a half pages of a poem called "Curious Facts About Dover Past and Present" by Mrs. Victoria E. Tuttle in 1905 published in Elyria newspapers. The poem mentions all of the early settlers and weaves in facts about what they grew or produced or did for a living.
