Letter from John D. Weld to Aaron Aldrich; two pages, 13 x 17 paper, folded 5 times. Letter concerns financial matters including a possibly forged/bad check payable to John, that could have been paid to the wrong party. He recommends that Aaron goes to the bank in Cleveland to resolve the matter and let him know as soon as possible what the outcome is.

Prov. Jany 29th 1850
Dear Brother,
In my last I wrote to inform
you that the Small Check you sent
to Me in Aug. which was last
Since I wrote I have called on the Cashier
of the Bank in Prov. where I got them
cashed he Said if that Check was paya-
-ble to my order the Bank in N.York
had paid it to an forged order they are
holden to pay it again and they
would pay it without any compulsion
Should I make it appear that they had
paid it to the wrong person he said
it was not unfrequent that Banks had
So to do He (the Cashier) Said you
had better call at the Bank in Cleavland
where you bought that Check and enquire
of them if they had Settled their acct.
with the Bank in N. York at which
this check was payable
He thought a better way would be to
get another check of the Same Sum and
Same date of the Bank in Cleavland
(of course they would not have to pay it
but once) If that check was lost it
will be the only way to get it of the Bank
in N. York

If that has been paid in N. York it proba-
-bly has been returned to Cleavland before
now you are so used my scribbling that
if any one has put my name to it you will
know it at sight as I have had to write
my name on the back of all that the Bank
in Prov. has paid When I wrote you last
in Oct. I think I was in hopes of hearing
from you in three of four weeks I had
been afraid you had written sent another
check and it had got lost
If you have not written previous to relay
this I wish you would write as soon
as convenient Your friends in this vicinity
are all enjoying good health as far as
we have any knowledge
