Scope and Content

Letter from M.A. Cahoon to Joseph Cahoon regarding Christmas. Rose Hill Dec 29/81 My Dear Joseph, I wrote to you last week and the same day I received a letter from you. Leverett and Ida left for Boston Friday 10 PM. We had a note from yesterday announcing their safe arrival. The girls came home Saturday and remained until this morning. They are expecting to receive company New [p. 2] Year. We had a very rainy day Christmas so that Thomas and family did not come home. I send you a History of the United States for your Christmas present. The girls send you a bookmark, also a card for Tommy and one for the little girl you used to talk about. You Pa and I gave the girls a nice family Bible. They gave Pa a very nice foot rest made to correspond with his chair. I had a celery stand. Your Pa is about as well as usual. Return thanks to Mrs. La Malla for the kind wishes, and present her with the congratulations [p. 3] of the season. Laura sent the photograph in the history. The girls say they had expected to send you a picture of the catalogue, but they will send it some other time. I believe they intend you to use the bookmark in your dictionary, you will see that it has a lucky stone from the Lake on the tassel. They bought the painting of the house have a a very elegant frame. Thomas bought the other one. Your Pa sat in his nice chair Christmas and enjoyed it with the new foot rest. Your sister Laura covered it with bright furniture calico. I enjoy mine very [p. 4] much, We all spoke of you and wished you were with us at dinner. Please write as soon as you receive the book xo.
