Letter from Martha Van Allen Cahoon to her esteemed friend Mrs. Richard Hughes recalling her journey to her new home. She and Mr. Cahoon bought a carriage in Cincinnati, and she said she and the children had a pleasant trip. Dover, Cuyahoga County Oct 18th. 42. Esteemed Friends, When I bid you farewell at the Log Cabin, I promised you I would write you soon after our arrival here. I find that it is two months since we parted. Thanks too a Good Being that I have the good news to write you that we arrived safe at the place of our destination in eight days. I will give you a brief sketch of our journey. We staid at W. Wood's the first night, remained in Cincinnati until Thursday noon. Mr Cahoon bought a comfortable carriage there we put Sally in and travelled along very pleasantly. we had delightful weather all the way. Thomas and Joseph had the ague the greater part of the way. and Thomas has had it - pretty bad since we have been here but is quite well at present. The children very often talk of you and your family. Oscar would say as we were on the road when he would see sheep or hogs. "Ma Hughes hogs" he will laugh and his eyes sparkle when I talk to him of Martha, Frances and Mary. he talks pretty well now but I expect Miss Martha says every thing, and beats him. Laura says dad and scolds, she has six teeth. and begins to creep. I have been quite busy drying peaches and apples. I have often wished you and Mr. Hughes [p. 2] could enjoy some of the good peaches they were very plentiful and the finest ones I ever saw. I think I will like to live here very well we have a fine view of the Lake see vessels and steamboats passing daily. I hope you will answer this as I feel anxious to hear of you and your family. I suppose Polly is living with you, you will please give my love to her and tell her I would like to see her. tell her we often talk of her and Lydia Kenyon, Oscar and Joseph send her a kiss and say they wish she would come out here. tell her Kenyon talks as much about the log cabin as he used to of Dover. he says I must tell Polly to come to Dover. If she is not living with you and you have an opportunity send her word of our safe arrival. I suppose Mr. Hughes is busy gathering in his corn. Lydia sends her love and kiss to Elizabeth. Mary Frances and little Martha she says she would like to see Mary and have a good play with her once more. she says Mary must come and see. she has had quit e a time visiting amongst her cousins. you will please remember us to W. Hughes' family, Mrs. Radcliffe, Mr Arnold and family, and any friends who may enquire after us. I suppose you have had the pleasure of seeing you Welsh sisterinlaws when you write tell me how you are pleased. Mr. Cahoon says tell Mr. Hughes the Tom Corwin or the Whig Ticket is far ahead in this County. The boys want to know how Marcella is and if she grows much. [p. 3] I believe I must now conclude. I wish you to write soon. Give our love to your children and Miss Martha for me. Thomas is not at home at present - he has been on a visit for a few weeks at one of his Aunts if he were here he would wish to be remembered to you all, and Polly also. Has Mr. Carmichael gone to White River yet. Write me a long letter all the news how Wilson and his wife come on. If you or Mr. Hughes should see Patrick Hannon remember us to him. Our goods arrived safe nothing broke. I must now say Farewell my dear Friend your sincere Friend M A Cahoon I forgot to tell you that Melissa and William were well and desire to be remembered to you Melissa expects an increase in her family about the middle of November.
