Scope and Content

Letter from Martha Cahoon addressed to "Sister Lydia." Martha relates her concerns about Toledo schools. She also reports that she has been quite sick with a cold and about various mutual friends. Toledo, Sep 17, 1875 Dear Sister I have some spare time in school and will devote it to writing to you instead of waiting till I get home to get paper. I rec'd your letter just as I was starting to Teachers meeting last Saturday morning. I am glad that you are satisfied with your school and are pleased with board. If you and the girls have schools that are better than any in Toledo it will be useless for me to think of coming to C- to teach as mine is so far behind many of the Toledo schools. I think I am going to have a much easier school Than I had last year & shall like Mrs. Curtiss. I have had a dreadful cold for a week very hoarse and a cough. It is some better and I think it will be well next week. With that exception I am very well feel almost as strong as ever. Misses Titus & Mulholler called to see me last night. They board on 13th st. near Adams so are quite near me. Dr. Danelson goes to Conference Tuesday morning I have not been well enough to go there yet but intend to go tonight anyway. I feel very sorry for him some of the people at St Pauls have treated him so staid away from [p. 2] church & prayer meetings and he feels it very much. He told Mrs. Hiett that he had engaged in almost everything since he was a boy and this was the first time he ever made a failure. Your position was pleasant to his. The scholars and teachers were all pleasant with you. Comparatively few are so with him and he has the mortification of not having pleased too. He looked sad and disappointed last Sunday. I have not seen Mrs. Peckham yet. She returned last week. Think I shall go there tomorrow if I am better. I have only ever seen Miss Nicholson at Teachers Meeting. I was at Mrs Hietts a little while Saturday afternoon. The baby is much better. Ollie is in the Senior Primary room this year. I am still in a small room at home will go into my own room in a week from tomorrow. Mrs. Watermans Sister, Mrs Gov. Scott from S. Carolina is visiting her now. We are having real cold weather and I suppose you are. I have not heard from home think I will surely get a letter tomorrow I hope you girls will write very often for Ma will not get time to write and she and you are all I shall get letters from. Of the three dollars I left- 1.50 was for you and the other 1.50 was for Ida. I owe Laura 65 cts. but did not have the money to leave. I can give you no information regarding the amount the rest of the family are indebted to you. Love to you all. Martha, [p. 2 margins] Tell Bart I wish he could give me a scotch kiss and that I could kiss him. Miss Bess Peckham accompanied her Ma to Ravenna & Cleveland. The other children staid with their Aunt Mannie. A. Hill is a father to a boy [p. 1 margin] Aunt Eliza found when she got to Black River that she had some one else's parasol in her hand and hers in the buggey. She left it at Elyria I forgot to tell you when I wrote before. I do not know what kind it is but presume it is Miss Goodsells. Cousin Abbie told me. She thought Aunt E said it was brown. 2000.FIC.02.232B: Envelope addressed to L.E. Cahoon Handwritten in black ink: Miss L.E.
