Scope and Content

Letter from Martha Cahoon addressed to "Dear Sister." Martha relates her first day teaching in Toledo and discusses the events and people she encountered that day and the days following that week. Attendance being low one day due to the circus being in town. 2000.FIC.02.231A 280 Adams St-Sep 6.175 Dear Sister I have finished my first day at school and thinking you girls would like to hear, will write you about my school, new home etc, the first evening. I staid at Cousin Abbies Friday night. Had a pleasant-visit only that I felt greatly disappointed not to go to Mrs Jewitts. It rained so hard that I could not go at night; and I left so early in the morning there was no time. I met misses Norton & Leland on the cars. Both seemed quite sorry that I was going to leave Stickney and glad that you had a school [p. 2] in C- I met the other teachers at meetings in the P.M. only saw Miss Smith a few minutes she came home Thursday said she had intended to write to you but had not done so for want of time. I shall go to Stickney School Wednesday night and left word for Miss Smith to stay after school if she wished to see me. After Teachers meeting I went to Stickney School house to get some things from my room Mrs B. & the girls seemed delighted to see me, gave me a bouquet to put in my room. I took some clothes for them to wash & will go for them Wednesday. I then start for Mrs. Vails & as I passed Mrs. Greers I looked for Bertie and did not see him but his mother saw me and called to me from the bay window to come back. I did so she came to the gate called Bertie. Who [p. 3] she says talks of his teachers very often and had been talking about us that day. She urged me to stay to tea and said she was very sorry I was going to leave and that you were not coming back. She & Bertie will miss us so much. She had intended to try to get me to board had been to see Mrs. V about it. While I was talking with her Mr Bell came along and did not seem in any greater hurry than he was before vacation. I walked with him to the corner when I saw Perry who said he has been playing horse all vacation. When I got to Mrs. Vails Mary was on the side walk at home She ran to meet me and called her mamma who was very pleasant glad that you had a school in Cleveland. As I could not stay to supper Mary got me two cookies and then ran out [p. 4] found Bernie and brought him to see me. Mr V was not at home After leaving there I went to Summit St. to take the car. While waiting there Sweetness herself came along with Minnie and another little girl. They stopped and talked to me Gertie sent her love to you. She was just as lovely as ever only that she is so freckled. After I came home and ate my supper I went to Mr Hietts a few minutes they are only one block from me. Mrs H. has invited me to come there at anytime any day. She says I may not always find her brushed up but I shall always find her glad to see me. Sunday morning I walked part way to church with Dr D- Staid to S.S. and saw more of the friends, all of whom inquired particularly after you. Our friends in this part of the city seem much pleased to know that I shall be here this year. 2000.FIC.02.231B [p. 5] I think I shall like my boarding place very much. This block is not at all pleasant and the house does not look pleasant from the outside, and I felt quite homesick for the old place when I went there Saturday night, but the house is elegantly furnished and is pleasant inside. They have two other boarders, Mr. & Mrs. Smith - "young married folks" - and two daughters, one a young lady and one twelve years old. There are only four schools in the building where I teach. Mrs. Curtiss principal. Miss South and Miss Calvin & I. My school is the same as Miss Lelands. I only had 30 pupils yesterday 20 of them boys I expect more today as the circus was here yesterday and only one block from the schoolhouse. There is no basement to the building The rooms are quite pleasant [p. 6] though not so nice as you had at Stickney, but much nicer than mine. The music teacher will not teach singing in any grade lower than Sen. Sec. He will organize a class to night at St. Pauls church, but I cannot go for I shall have to treat my eyes for a while after I write to the Dr. He expects to each Tues & Fri nights. He is the gentleman who had singing classes here last winter. Prof. Dane. Miss Titus still has the erysipelas a little in her face. She sends a great deal of love to you. The weather has been quite comfortable and I am pretty well I hope you may all find your schools as pleasant as last year. Do you close at eleven? I expect to write to Ma tomorrow. Please write to me soon. I am quite tired writing and will close Yrs. Martha I have not seen the Col to speak to him
