Letter from Randall Crawford, lawyer, in New Albany, Indiana to Joel B. Cahoon indicating that he has received a settlement offer from Mr. Smith's attorney.
New Albany Aug 29, 1848
Mr Cahoon
Dr Sr
Yours of 13th inst. is recd. today. I have been at home but a few days since our spring court. Saw Mr Smith in the crowd at a late court in another county, but had no communication with him. His counsel have offered by his authority to let you have $150 of the money in my hands, & he takes the balance. From what you said when here, I suppose you will not accept the offer. Our court will sit the 23rd of October. As soon as I can attend to it, will take the depositions of McGinly & such other witnesses as I find. If anything special occurs, will write you; otherwise you need not attend.
Respectfully Hc [etc.]
