Letter from Randall Crawford, lawyer, in New Albany, Indiana to Joel B. Cahoon indicating that the legislature passed a law to pay Mr. Cahoon, but the treasury was empty.
New Albany July 28, 1847
Mr Joel B Cahoon
Dr Sir
The Legislation did pass a law last winter that the amount due you should be paid. The treasury however was empty & nothing has yet been paid. I will write the proper officer to know if payment cannot now be made. Mr John A Smith says he is entitled to a part of this money. That is a matter for you & him to settle. The state agent suggested last winter that in paying the money he would wish me to produce a written authority from you. A am blank is sent herewith, which will thank you to acknowledge before a Notary Public & return to me.
Respectfully
R. Crawford
