Scope and Content

Letter and envelope from W.H. Cahoon to Miss Ida Cahoon. The letter is a handwritten genealogy providing missing genealogy information related to 2000.FIC.02.002. The man who wrote the letter, William Hamblin Cahoon, says he is a descendant of William Cahoon, brother of Reynolds Cahoon, Ida Maria Cahoon's great-grandfather. 2000.FIC.02.003A 69 Gladstone Ave. Detroit, Mich., Sept.19,1916 My dear Miss Cahoon; I might address you "My dear Cousin", although about forty-seven more or less, as you will see later. I want, first of all, to thank the Cahoon Pioneer Association, and particularly its President, for the inscribed copy of the "History of the Cahoon Family". I have been much interested in it. I have been comparing it with notes of mine and am able to supply some [p. 2] data that is missing. Page 18, line 5, Joseph Cahoon married Hannah Kent (born July 2, 1667) daughter of John Kent and Hannah Griswold (this I found in the Kent genealogy. Page 19, first line, Ebenezer and his brother William enlisted Oct. 11, 1781 from Williamstown, Berkshire Co., Mass., service 14 days. Page 21, line 5, Reynolds married Bathania Whitcomb and had: Salome S. Benjamin S. Wm. Reynolds, b. Feb. 14, 1823 in Little Falls, Herkimer Co., N.Y. Lyman Emily J. Mary H. 2000.FIC.02.003B [p. 3] This Reynolds, son of Benjamin, was born about 1786 in Salisbury. He died in 1879, aged 93, his wife died in 1874, aged 75. William Reynolds Cahoon married Jane [Ann] Utter off Sodus (dau. of John M. Utter) in May 1847. Jane was born Jan. 1824. They had Chas. E., (married Imogene Nichols and had Wm, born May 5, 1881) and Clara J., died at six years. This I have copied from a History of Herkimer Co., N.Y., and I have given it to you as I thought it might be of interest. While your descent is from Reynolds, son of Ebenezer, [p. 4] mine if from his brother Wm. My information regarding Wm., is very limited and if you have anything more about him or know who has I shall be interested to know it. He had a son Ebenezer and undoubtedly one Wm. and they moved from Exeter, R.I. to Hancock or Williamstown and thence to Cambridge, N.Y. In 1790 census of N.Y. state there is a Wm. Sr. and Wm. Jr. in Cambridge. John Cahoon, my greatgrandfather, was born there in 1793, and he married Mary Sprague, granddaughter of David Sprague who 2000.FIC.02.003C [p. 5] also removed from Exeter to Hancock and to Cambridge. Have you any record of James Cahoon, Rev. War soldier from Pittsfield, Berkshire Co., Mass.? Page 42, line 11, Ebenezer 3 married Mary Reynolds, I feel very certain, for 3 reasons: 1 Naming a son Reynold; 2 Peter Reynolds witnessing a deed (line 24); Francis Reynolds, of North Kingston ("Kings Towne") where Ebenezer lived had a son Peter born 1691 and a daughter Mary born 1796 (same year as Ebenezer) and I can't find that [p. 6] she married anyone else. I am just about satisfied that my idea is correct. Do you know anything to the contrary? Do you suppose that Capt. S. Albert Johnson of South Pasadena, Cal., (page 20, line 18) has any more data? I wrote him about 2 weeks ago and have had no reply. I will close now. I would like to hear from you about "Mary Reynolds" . Again thanking you and with kindest regards, I am, Sincerely your kinsman Wm. Hamblin Cahoon Note on the side: There was one John Cahoon (of Smyrna, Del.) with Washingtons Pennsylvania troops and was with the army at 2000.FIC.02.003D Envelope addressed to Miss Ida M.
