Scope and Content

Letter to D.K. Cahoon concerning a counter offer to accepting script as payment. Louisville Ky May 29th/40 D. Cahoon Your letter of the 27th I read this Morning, according to the instructions therein contain I called on Pushing & Co to know if he was willing to take Indiana scrip for the loan you made of him, this he declined except at a discount of 20 percentum on the $50 notes as 10 percentum on the $5 notes this I presume is more than you are willing to give, - if so you had better make the arrangements to send the money at the expiration of the two weeks from the 18th of the present month. I will follow the instructions you may give in your next on the subject. The commissioner has not yet come and I understand & will not come before the 15th of next month. Maj. Barnes DePatterson, his father in law & Brother James Patterson spent a day or two with us last week on their way to Mo. last week, the Maj had his Servants & Stock with [p. 2] him, he appears poor fellow to be in low spirits. On Yesterday the Barbecue at the mouth of Harrads Creek took place, it is represented as a brilliant affair but owing to the inclemence of the weather the crowd was not as numerous as was expected, it has however numbered some six thousand had it been fair weather 20,000 would not have told the take?. The delegation from New Albany was larger I counted 240 in the string as they passed the Hotel to the Company was met by about the same number from Jefferson guilds they marched up to the bay Cabin to give it some cheers before going to the boat. The military from Cincinnati made a brilliant display, take it all in all, the affair was well got up, and went off in fine style, I hope you will not fail at seeing Mr. Shoemaker and use your influence in my behalf having come out to their Country I dislike to have it work thou I came and having more over been fooled by the Lex.A.O.R.R. Co. to the tune of some $1200 and by the State of Indiana to the [p. 3] tune of as many thousands am anxious to recuperate a little in the line of my profession if I can, if not of course in some other way. From my long experience in Civil Engineering both on Canals and rail roads as well as Slack water improvements etc. and from my misfortunes in many matters I think. I am entitled at least to a livelihood from pulling works if any one is. My bad luck in many matters heirwences I attribute partly to perhaps I ought to lay mainly to my having always been too much after "Bon vis von" but what is life unless it can be enjoyed with our friends. Success to you Yours Truly J.B. Moultan D.K.Cahoon Address: Letter embossed to close Postmark in green: Louisville / May / 30 right: blue script D. K. Cahoon Esq.
