Scope and Content

Letter to Elizabeth W. Braman from Aaron W. Aldrich Front Right: West Dover Sept 14th/84 Elizabeth: One reason I have not written before is that in fixing up for Brs. Brands family & ??? Ryders family in the 2 families they moved the bookcase into Mrs. Brands bedroom & I dared not go after my writing tools; but if I had them I have no inclination to write, or am so tired or something else that I do not get about it. But I had made up my mind to write to day so hear I am, a bit. Netta has been here about 2 weeks & is going back in about 2 weeks more Henry & Mary Amos & Netta have gone to Grafton & will be home tomorrow. Netta likes a Da Kota better than Ohio, she has 10 acres of land & has 40 acres sowed to wheat, she teaches for a living. she thinks her land is worth about $1200. I hardly know what to write about my land. I was sick of paying Back left: on unimproved land in a new country & in a stack country. Yet as you say I might have gone out there & fenced in my land & help stock men off & improved it & made it worth more, but I had the impression that it was to stoney for me to work. If I had gone out ther some years ago as you talked of, & you & D had gone onto the land it would have been no better you see, for as D can be nowhere so well contented as when in the law business in some shape, & as I am not young as I once was & worth nothing it would folly for me to undertake to go to a new country to begin life anew on a farm. If man who goes out to work has a hard time & gets nothing or if he gets only half his wages, perhaps not that. If he got his board & clothes he may think himself well off. I may as well stay with Henry & get nothing as any way but is like being in some other place I can tell of. If you succeed in selling my land I want you to take your pay out of it if I owe you anything. I owe no body any unless it is you. I think my last tax bill made owe you 45 cents. The making out of the deed & I want you should pay all expenses out of the money you get nothing shall come up here after Back Right: Sept 21st I received yours of 15th last wes wednesday. you say you will be obliged to have an abstract from me. What do you mean by an abstract from me? I have nothing to my to make out one only my deed: The only records know nothing about my land here. My deed is recorded in Wabaunsee County. there is no Mortgage or any other due that can be brought against it. If you make out an abstract of your land I think mine would be about the same. My land is clear of all incumbrances as far as anything I know of. I have kept the taxes paid every year that you know. If Mr. Solscheid wants an abstract cannot you make one for him & if he wishes send it to me & I will sign it & I will go before a Justice any other office & swear to it As to the payments I am greatly surprised. I wanted the many down. What good will it ever do me to let the money run and be five year & get my pay in little dribbles. I do not want to breakup the bargain; but for a man of my age to to get the last payment would make me 75 years old or 74 years. Front Left: I met with A big Accident you see On this page I have concluded to let Mr. Solscheid have the land & give hime four years from the date of Deed to pay for it but I want it secured by a Mortgage with it 8 percent interest on the land If he wants an abstract I think he can get one made out right there. I am unwilling to be to the expense of hunting up the records I bought the land of you & you bought of Mr. Allen & he had it from government & if he an abstract let him be to the expense getting it I had considerable to write but this land business throws me off the track I am stuying Baptism; & it is enough make any are tha Christianity is all a farce; Burns says; a hangman whip to hand the wretch in order; perhaps I shal hear back from you before you get this Yours A.W.A
