Scope and Content

Letter from Thomas Eubunk, U.S. Patent Office to J.B. Cahoon about his patent application for a new type of Plank Road. US Patent Office March 20th 1830 Sir You claims to letters patent for alleged improvements in plank roads have been examined and I regret to state found to present nothing new or patentable. The form of plank road described by you; having sleepers with rails attached upon which the wheels may run, and a path made for the horses between the planks or wooden rails; was in use in England in the 17th century. [p. 2] you are referred to Hebert on Railways and Locomotion - London 1837. pp. 6&7 and to a Practical Treatise on Rail Roads by Nicholas Wood Philadelphia 1832, pp 36-37-38. In descriptions of this kind of road. For terms of appeal or withdrawal see the enclosed circular Yours Respectfully, Thomas Eubank Mr. J.B. Cahoon North Dover Cuyahoga Ohio
