Sunday Evening August 19th 1838
Dear Nancy
A lovely evening this, no Nancy-Anastasia on Lafayette to converse or prattle the charm the lovely minutes as they pass. but I have to sit in silence I gaze upon the smooth lovely waters of the Maumee as the sun sheds its last evening rays across its boasom which has heretofore bourn its hundreds of steamboats on its waters but whither have they all fled. Not one has appeared to day to break the lonely enchantment that seems to persuade the City at least my own once sweet home - but how is Lafayette how is Anastasia & how is my own dear Nancy is she well is she better is she improving an how is our little ones. Ah could some winged messages tell me they were all well an better how it would relieve this aching anxiety about those who are my only Earthly comfort solace an support - but so it must be and all I have to console me is hope and to that I resort and believe that all will yet be well if we are but faithful in all things and put our trust in Him who is mighty to save and can not deceive -
After leaving you I arrived at Huron just as a boat have in sight bound up it was the Constitution I took passage and was quite sick and got home at twelve o'clock at night - -.
[Next few lines are crossed out with pencil]
I boarded at Johnsons but he would not give any thing for my cow and did not milk her regular therefore I quit (Good and happy is the man that keeps bachelor hull) Samuel has a great notion of joining me but that will be in as I say you know.
[End of crossed out section]
I am quite well & hope this may meet you an amy enjoying the same inestimable blessing (Sickness is very much abating) Please write on receipt of this if not before please kiss for me Anastasia Lafayette & accept one for your dear self & confer a favor am yours truly William
Tell Franklin to send me all the hands he can & come himself as soon as may be W.O. Cahoon
