Model Mackinaw BoatEntry/Object ID
1996.A.065Description
Mackinaw model. Green hull, two masts, 3 sails. 1 1/2" wood planking on deck. 16 1/2" bowsprit, a spar projecting from the upper end of the bow of a sailing vessel, for holding the tacks of various jibs or stays and often supporting a jib boom.
The Mackinaw Boat was a highly capable boat built for the choppy waters and high winds frequently experienced on the Great Lakes. Round sided, it had two masts and a head sail on a bowsprit. It was a fast and very versatile craft that could safely carry people or freight. It was also used in commercial fishing before the coming of gasoline engines. Often 26 feet to 35 feet in length, this model shows Henry's attempt to shorten the boat to a length that might appeal to a hobbyist boater.Collection
