Scope and Content

Newspaper article" Cahoon Pioneer Association" by S.J. Kelly. Discusses buildings that have been erected and progress made in the community with roads and railroads. Lists a number of important local family names but focuses one section on Joel B. Cahoon. Tells of how he helped his father Joseph Cahoon come to Dover and build a cabin. Served in the War of 1812, during which, it claims, he was underage and fought at Macinac Island. When he returned, he was a mail carrier on horseback between Cleveland and Maumee County. He went to N.Y. [place of his birth in 1793] and worked in a mill. He returned to Ohio and formed a business partnership with his brother Daniel. They had contracts for turnpikes and later for work on the canal with an office in Boston, Ohio. They also did engineering work in Pittsburgh and Maryland, where he met his future wife, Margaret Van Allen Cahoon. The article then talks about Margaret's background, including she was the young widow of sculptor Van Allen. In 1842, the Cahoons moved to Cincinnati for more work and settled in North Bend. Brother Daniel died. Later Joel returned to the home of his youth and work left by his father, Joseph. He repaired and set the old grist mill back in motion and worked until illness incapacitated him. In Oct. 10, 1860, Joel held the first semi-centennial of their ancestor's settling in Dover, taking place on the lawn under a gigantic tree Joel had planted as a youth. The old log cabin hearthstone was uncovered and the original tea kettle of the pioneer used in making tea. This began annual meetings that lasted for a third of a century or more. 120 attended in 1878. Joel and Margaret celebrating their golden wedding anniversary in 1881 and Joel is listed as paralytic for two years prior to that, later dying in September 28, 1882. Their children are listed.
