Scope and Content

"Ownership and People of Dover" by Vincent Cooler typed document. Possibly a copy. Made sometime before 1960 as on page 5 it states that the "library now stands" at the Cahoon Family home. Talks about the history of Dover in general, not just Bay Village area. Native Americans: Goes back in local history to the Mound Builders and other early Native Americans and then later the early European explorers. Mentions two instances of violence between white settlers and Native Americans or Indians in Dover, stealing pewter to make bullets at Barney Hall's cabin at Detroit road and kidnapping of the daughter of Daniel Page who lived on Lot 97, the most northwesterly lot in Dover (Bay Village). See 2023.FIC.013 which shows Page owned property from 1810 to 1814, when transferred to Ranson Foote. Also, trade with Native Americans, and land claims, especially lands west of Dover. Mentions three sawmills, two gristmills and 1 distillery on Cahoon Creek. "Fire parties" after clearing land and other forms of community entertainment. Roads, elections, and lots.
