Gloucester, June 14th, 1841
Dear Brother I received your letter in due time after
you wrote was very glad to hear from you. All the
apologies I can offer for not writing sooner is I have
been very much in a hurried. Probably you have heard by
the way of Andrew Winsors that I have rented a farm
in Gloucester belonging to Parder Hunt I could find
no chance for purchasing when the land and price
would both suit to buy much of a farm should have
to run considerable in debt as I am now situated
I expect if I never move to Ohio had better sell my
farm there low than to have it be many years as it
now does without receiving but little for use of it I have
a chance to trade it for a farm in Pomfret, Conn.
the owner of the farm has been to see my twice I have
been once to see his farm I expect he will want more
boat than I shall be willing to pay. I am willing Mr.
Smith should manage that place until I can do
something with it at sixty dollars per year but I count
the rent ensured. That is I went to feel sure that the
rent will be paid when it becomes due that was
the agreement betwixt him and me he was to have
it for five years by getting a good endorses each year for
the rent providing I did not sell or move on to it myself
he was to have the privilege of cutting the timbers off of
as in each land as he cleared and no more had this
privilege of clearing out not to exceed twenty acres. He was
to set fifty young appletrees if he has not done it I want
him to attend to it next fall to be sure. I count you to
see to it as you would if it were your own you can till
there what is best to do with it better than I can here. Charge me with
the trouble you are to and take your pay.

The report is that Brother Andrew And his son Andrew are coming
to Ohio after haying if so you can have a chance to send
the best years rent by Andrew if Smith makes it out before
he returns if there is not a fair prospect of getting the rent of
Smith I wish you to let it to some one else that will
pay for the most you can get. The lease mentions that
if he did not manage but one year I was to have half
of the wheat now on the ground but am willing he
should have it if I can have the rent. If you should
have a little money for me when Andrew returns
(if he comes) it would be better to make an exchange
for Eastern money if you could probably Andrew jr
will have some Eastern money when he arrives
if you can make an exchange with him you had better
pay him something if he exacts it than to send
Ohio money I should have to pay something I know
not how much to get it exchanged about here.
Tell neighbors Colosse if he wants that farm now is the
time to buy if I should conclude to trade with
the man in Pomfret or should ever move there he
would have a hard chance to get it to what he does now
I wish you would just dress me a line soon as
you receive this and let me know whether Smith
has paid his last years rent and what the pro-
-spect is of his paying this years rent how his-
wheat and grass looks and every thing else you
can think of. Write how crops look with you in general
whether your season is wet or dry cold or hot -
We had a remarkable color wet Spring about 4
weeks last past has been warm and dry till
last night had a few shower corn was planted
late coming on fast grass will I think probably
be light. Brother Stone manages his wifes share of the
old farm and the share belonging to Henry's heirs

to sit in after the work is done but that is a circumstance that dont
happen very often for we have 8 cows and a hired man you must
know that it keeps me pretty busy I have done alone until last
week when I had a woman come and mash she has engaged
to come one day in a week. last week we made 40 lb of butter
from 7 cows besides what new milk we want for super & C.
I expect Nancy and her family Tuesday after which she will not
visit us again until September is past. I hope you will go and
see Henry’s children this fall if I lived as near them as you do
I think I should go if you do give my love to them and tell
them I should be glad to see them in R.I. remember me to
sister B and all family tell them to write wont you and
