Pile Driver Barge ModelEntry/Object ID
1996.A.063Description
Pile Driver Barge model. Unpainted wood, handrails and sides, pile driver pulley system. 1.125" wide planks on the deck going width wise. Built by Henry Wischmeyer.
This vessel was used to vertically drive wooden posts or metal beams into soil or lake bottoms, providing a foundation for piers, buildings, bridges and other structures. This type of pile driver uses a weight placed between guides so that it can slide vertically. Placed above a pile, the weight is raised by use of hydraulics, steam, diesel or manual labor. When the weight reaches its highest point, it is released and hits the pile, driving it downward. This pile driver sits on a barge, or a flat-bottomed boat, which would rock and roll when piles were being hammered into the ground.Collection
